Bowling Club Collapse

The Bowling Club second grade cricket side snatched defeat from the jaws of victory against Tatt’s in last Saturdays second grade final at Hogan Oval. The Bowling Club side were cruising at 2/118 in the 28th over needing just 37 runs to claim victory with Craig Summers (65) and Terry Baker (41) in control. The wicket of Baker to Tom Druce started an unlikely collapse as Bowling Club lost four wickets without progressing the total as Ben Rumsby claimed the valuable wicket of Mick Davis with a run out and Mick Smith was caught by Robert Packer off the bowling of Nathan Collis both without scoring. Craig Summers tried his best to limp his side home however Mitchell Lawty ended the party when he bowled Summers with the target just 15 runs away. The remaining bowling club players tried valiantly to crawl to victory with C Drysdale remaining not out 8 as the side fell just 7 runs short of what had earlier looked like a certain victory. The wicket takers for Tatt’s were well spread with Chris Booby 2/14, Tom Druce 2/34, Mitch Lawty 2/35 and Nathan Collis 2/37 all claiming a double.

Veteran Wayne Knight had earlier played a dominant role in steering his side to 8/154 from their 40 overs with a fine 50 while Hunter Harley defied illness to score a valuable 48. Mick Smith returned the best bowling figures for the Bowling Club side with 2/8

Tatt’s will now take on arch rivals RSL this weekend at Hogan Oval in the second grade grand final which will be a replay of last years match which saw Tatt’s upset the minor premiers to claim the Barrett Cup.

GRAND FINAL

RSL are second grade winners

The RSL second grade cricket side went one better than their first grade club-mates with a comprehensive thrashing of Tatts in the second grade grand final at Hogan Oval. RSL made excellent use of a good batting wicket to post 120 runs in just 18 overs as Michael Miskle (69) and Mick Bayliss (46) dealing harshly with wayward Tatt’s bowling. The departure of the opening batsmen within four runs of each other did little to stem the run flow as Darren Clarke (40) and Neil Brayshaw (19) continued the surge to 200. The RSL innings concluded at 8/221 after 40 overs with Tatts bowling nineteen wides in the RSL innings to give the minor premiers an extra three overs of scoring opportunities. Tatts best with the ball was Nathan Collis with 2/29 from his eight overs while Rob Packer bowled four overs to claim 1/12.

The Tatts innings needed to get off to a good start to have any hope of running down such a large total in forty overs however, Michael Miskle had in-form opener Nathan Collis out for a duck when he had him trapped leg before in his second over. Steven Packer (5) became the next to fall when he was caught off the bowling of the second grade’s leading wicket taker Dwayne Shawcross with the score on 15. Wayne Knight (14) was run out with the total on 32 and his wicket triggered a continued stream of dismissals as the young Tatts batsmen couldn’t handle the control and accuracy of Neil Brayshaw 3/23 and brother John with 2/6 to be dismissed for just 75 in reply. Hunter Harley with 31 was the standout of the Tatts batting while RSL’s Miskle and Shawcross bowled well in the early overs to restrict Tatts to just 15 runs from the first ten overs.

RSL deserved their premiership being the dominant second grade side all year and Michael Miskle completed a memorable match to claim the grand final man of the match medal for his impressive efforts with bat and ball. Tatts would be disappointed with their final effort for the season while being confident looking to next year with a number of junior players benefiting from the experience.
